Legends

Kavarna is also known for its legends and stories covered in mystery. Some people believe that the rocky coast of Kaliakra is reddish because it has been soaked with the blood of those who died in various epochal battles. One of the mystical stories tells how during the Ottoman rule, St. Nicola, whose chapel was built there, tried to escape from the Ottomans and the Lord helped him by stretching the ground under his feet further into the sea, and thus forming Cape Kaliakra. Another legend tells how 40 Bulgarian girls have braided their hair together and jumped in the deep water of the Black Sea, determined to lose their lives but to keep their freedom.
